AI data centers would add another large source of demand.
Those links could tighten regional balances and produce wide differences between hubs, according to Noreva. Gas consumed near large data centers could affect prices elsewhere, while export demand would more closely connect domestic buyers with the global market. AI demand is therefore one contributor to the forecast, alongside slower supply growth and rising exports, rather than the sole cause.
The consequences would extend beyond fuel suppliers. Gas represents about half the cost of electricity from a large power plant, so a doubling or tripling in price could make data centers that bring their own power substantially more expensive to operate. Companies could pass some of that expense into the cost of AI tokens or connect facilities to the electricity grid, potentially putting upward pressure on power prices.
